International Executive of the Year 2019 – Jim Umpleby

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caterpillar Inc., D. James Umpleby III has been named the 2019 International Executive of the Year. On May 15th, join the Executives’ Club of Chicago in celebrating Umpleby’s nearly 40 years of service at the company. The honoree will deliver the keynote address, followed by a moderated conversation with E. Scott Santi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Illinois Tool Works Inc. The two will discuss Caterpillar’s history and its move to Chicago, as well as Umpleby’s career trajectory.

Umpleby joined Solar Turbines, now a Caterpillar subsidiary based in San Diego, California, in 1980 as an associate engineer. He became president of Solar Turbines and a Caterpillar vice president in 2010. From 2013 to 2016 he led Caterpillar’s Energy & Transportation business segment as group president. Umpleby became CEO of Caterpillar in 2017 and was elected Chairman of Caterpillar’s board of directors in December of 2018. Under his leadership, the company has experienced tremendous growth domestically and internationally, becoming the 65th largest company in the world according to the 2018 Fortune 500 list.
